Spectrasonics Instruments & the Intel Mac Platform

Apple's shift from PowerPC to Intel architecture was a major change for music software. Although the original Atmosphere and Trilogy instruments are not Intel Mac-native plugins, Spectrasonics is fully committed to the Intel Mac platform. We have already released Omnisphere and Trilian, the successors to Atmosphere and Trilogy.

Stylus RMX was the first example of Spectrasonics' commitment to transition our entire product line to the Intel Mac platform. We transitioned the original Stylus from a licensed technology to our own in-house technology when we introduced Stylus RMX, based on our S.A.G.E. technology. This approach added many innovations to the original product and allowed us to deliver RMX as the first native Universal Binary instrument plugin available on the market.

In the same way, we have transitioned our popular Atmosphere and Trilogy instruments to the next generation of instruments based on our new in-house STEAM technology. Omnisphere, the successor to Atmosphere has been released, and is available now. Trilian, the successor to Trilogy, has been released, and is available now. That completes the transition of our entire product line, making all of our instruments 100% Intel Mac-compatible.

We are offering generous upgrade paths to the new instruments. We strongly encourage our existing Atmosphere users to upgrade to Omnisphere, and existing Trilogy users to upgrade to Trilian.

FAQs

Are Omnisphere and Trilian Intel Native Plugins?
Yes! Omnisphere and Trilian supersede Atmosphere and Trilogy, and represent the future of those plugins. Together with Stylus RMX, Omnisphere and Trilian complete our transition to our in-house technology, and all three are Intel Mac-native plugins.

Are Stylus RMX, Omnisphere, and Trilian 64 bit?
All of our instruments are 64 bit, and will also work in 32 bit systems.

Will the Atmosphere/Trilogy plugins ever have "Universal Binary" updates?
No, unfortunately this is not possible with the licensed engine. Instead, we have created new instruments from the ground up with our own STEAM engine, which, in addition to massive new libraries, incorporate all the sounds from the original Atmosphere and Trilogy instruments.

Omnisphere and Trilian, the successors to Atmosphere and Trilogy, are Universal Binary and run as native instruments on Intel Mac machines. Atmosphere and Trilogy customers can upgrade to Omnisphere and Trilian at our Techshop.

Are there any workaround solutions that I can use, so that I can keep working with the original Atmosphere and Trilogy plugins in my projects?
While we cannot provide support for these options, there are some workarounds that might allow you to continue to use the original Atmosphere and Trilogy plugins in your music:

Use another computer to host Atmosphere and Trilogy and trigger them via MIDI from your Intel Mac OSX sequencer. This can be done using any compatible G3/G4/G5 or Windows PC computer and a standalone host like Steinberg's V-Stack. Run Windows on your Intel Mac using Boot Camp, and use a Windows host application like Cubase/Pro Tools/Live etc. This is obviously a radical solution, but it does work from a technical point of view. Use a standalone hardware host like the MUSE Receptor, which works well with Atmosphere and Trilogy.
