WINTER NAMM 2002
**For Immediate Release**
Spectrasonics Launches New Virtual Instrument Division
Internationally renown sound developer Spectrasonics announced the beginning of a new era in the company's history -- the launch of the Spectrasonics Virtual Instrument division.
The new division's prime directive is to develop innovative, professional sample-based Virtual Instrument software
plug-ins. Los Angeles-based Spectrasonics announced that it has joined forces with Univers Sons of Paris to create virtual instruments, based on a customized version of the 32 bit Universal Virtual Instrument (UVI) engine. These new products represent a new type of software plug-in instrument concept, that integrates a custom three gigabyte core library of thousands of new sounds with a powerful user interface for shaping unique variations of the core sounds.
Each virtual instrument opens as a native plug-in inside host applications like Digital Performer, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, or Pro Tools and instantly supplies the user with thousands of sounds - and millions of variations - at their fingertips. At NAMM, Spectrasonics launched their new line with three ground-breaking products: Atmosphere Dream Pad Module,
Trilogy Total Bass Module, and Stylus Vinyl Groove Module.
All of the sample material in each instrument is brand-new, with nothing reused from Spectrasonics existing sample libraries. Each module supplies a massive core library of new sounds, along with controls for modifying and layering them, for virtually limitless, customized variations. The controls for each module vary, and are specifically suited to the type of sounds the instrument produces. By tailoring the controls in this fashion, Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments are easy to use and produce results very quickly.
The cornerstone philosophies of the new division are:
Quality
Spectrasonics stellar reputation for sound quality is undisputed. The company's award-winning sample libraries are in constant use by the top professional composers, producers, remixers and recording artists in the world. Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments will continue to expand on this tradition of sonic excellence.
Quantity
The new Virtual Instruments from Spectrasonics have massive core libraries as their foundation. Each instrument has gigabytes of samples, thousands of sounds and millions of combination possibilities. By working from such a large pool of high-quality material, Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments can present an instrument's concept comprehensively, and easily surpass the sonic capabilities of conventional hardware-based synthesizers and simple DSP-based software synths.
Flexibility
The custom interfaces of each of the instruments bring powerful dynamic control to the end user. All Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments have extensive editing, based on the belief that musicians have an essential need to shape and interact with their sounds. The numerous special features such as dynamic layering, multimode filtering and extended Groove Control, take these instruments far beyond the capabilities of simple "sample players", and open up numerous breakthroughs for musical expression and sonic manipulation.
Compatibility
All instruments are presented in VST Mac/PC, Pro Tools RTAS and MOTU MAS plug-in formats, ensuring that the vast majority of computer-based musicians can have access to these powerful sounding instruments...without requiring any kind of sampler. Every user can experience the same level of performance from their Spectrasonics instrument, regardless of their choice of host platform. A customer can even utilize it in multiple hosts, since all of the plug-in versions are included in one package!
Simplicity
Since each instrument is dedicated to a specific musical function, the interface can be streamlined and kept much simpler than in conventional samplers. Each instrument has an intuitive, extensively organized directory and auditioning capabilities built into the interface. Loading times are very fast -- even large, complex patches take merely seconds.
Spectrasonics' Creative Director, Eric Persing says, "We are extremely excited about this new direction for the company, which erases the previous limitations of supporting ancient hardware sampler formats, the confusion of the many competing software sampler platforms, and brings our world of ultra-high quality sampling to a much wider audience. Our goal is to create products that are not only powerful, and not merely simple to use -but instruments that are powerfully simple. The new Virtual Instrument division gives us the opportunity to deliver a richer, more dynamic user experience than ever before and provides a very promising future for innovation....this is just the beginning!"
