David Schwartz scores Cult Comedy with Spectrasonics

Although it’s no longer on the air, the Emmy award-winning “Arrested Development” was one of those TV comedies that was widely considered to be way ahead of its time. The best news is that all three seasons of the classic cult show are now available on DVD. If you haven’t seen this hilarious show, we highly recommend checking it out!The music on the show is original, quirky and full of spot-on musical parodies. Versatile composer David Schwartz has been a long-time user and uses Spectrasonics Virtual Instruments and libraries widely in the score.”I’ve used Spectrasonics instruments on pretty much every show I’ve written - from Arrested Development and Deadwood, to the current shows I’m doing for the new fall season - including ‘Runaway’, ‘Big Day’ and ‘Underfunded’. Spectrasonics is always the first place I go when I’m under pressure to write. They make the kind of sounds that I use, and their products are always the best place to look.”

Stylus RMX with the acoustic SAGE Xpanders like Backbeat, Retro Funk, Ethno Techno and Liquid Grooves form the groove foundation for many different kinds of cues in the show. Even the special Katrina benefit project, ‘New Orleans Strut’ makes its way into the 3rd season score. “I wanted to make a special note about the New Orleans Strut project. It would have been terrific just for the charity aspect, but the grooves were fabulous and brought a whole new Cajun flavor to RMX.”

Atmosphere plays important roles in David’s work as well. “On Arrested Development, I used the Hybrid String patches as my go-to strings. I’m using the Cathedral Strings as my main strings on this tense fugitive show called ”Runaway” right now. It has the right dark sound. I’m also learning more about Stylus RMX’s advanced features and using those in the latest shows I’m doing. I’m also a big fan of editing the RMX Big Boomers to create different percussive hits.”

David is not only an acclaimed composer, but an outstanding Bass player too. His memorable theme music to the classic show “Northern Exposure” showcased his killer fretless sound. Oddly enough, he was one of our very first customers to buy the Bass Legends sample library! “I do remember buying Bass Legends years ago, and I guess I was one of the first customers for Spectrasonics. It had the only upright string bass that I could compose with. Since I am a bass player though I would force myself to replace the parts I wrote with my own playing. It gives my cues a unique personality. But the Spectrasonics sounds also made me write different types of bass parts, my fingers didn’t just go to where I was comfortable on my bass. So I’d have to learn the parts that I wrote with Bass Legends, and then play them on my bass. I use Trilogy in a similar way today, to write quickly, and then I replay the bass parts myself.”
