Charlie Clouser - Scoring with Trilogy

CU charlie

Charlie Clouser, renowned remixer, keyboardist, producer and composer is currently deep in scoring mode with two top TV shows at once:

NBC’s “Las Vegas” and CBS’s “Numb3rs.”

For the past several years, high above the city’s bustle in the Hollywood Hills, Clouser created his ultimate Apple Mac-based composing studio where virtual instruments reign. When he boots up a cue for one of the TV shows everything is open and ready to play and edit — all locked to digital video. Seemingly a long way from his work with rock luminaries David Bowie, NIN and Rob Zombie —to name only a few— Charlie is now integrating his unique, cutting-edge approach to support the shows and films he scores.

On the weekly score to “Las Vegas” Charlie always has a place for his favorite Trilogy bass sounds. “The acoustic and electric bass patches in Spectrasonics Trilogy provide 90 percent of the bass sounds on my cues for NBC’s “Las Vegas”. The artifacts and key-up layers really help to add life and slop to the programmed bass parts. There’s also something about the way they’re voiced that lets them speak really well when broadcast. Too many “big” bass sounds just seem to disappear when they hit the NBC compressor, but Trilogy is up to the task. I love it.”

And Charlie is using REX loops from his vast collection in Stylus RMX for Numb3rs. “I’ve just started using Stylus RMX on the score for CBS’s “NUMB3RS”, mainly as a means of quickly browsing and playing my REX files through the effects chains in RMX. Some of the combination effect presets are really great, and turn old familiar drumloops into wild crashing noise. Great stuff.”
